Kapustin N, Piano Sonatas 2005

Nikolai Kapustin (b.1937), member of the USSR Composer’s Union since 1980, graduated from the Class of Prof. A.B.Goldenweiser at the Moscow P.I.Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in 1961. In the late 50s he had made himself a name as an excellent jazz pianist (improvising in the manner of bebop), arranger and composer; he owed this reputation to his numerous – and highly successful – appearances with his own quintet as well as Yuri Saulsky’s Central Artist’s Club Big Band, Moscow. In 1961-1972 he kept touring throughout the country and abroad with Oleg Lundstrem’s Jazz Orchestra. The style of his compositions is a distinctive amalgamation of the great traditions of this country’s musical culture, the universally significant achievements of West European classical and post classical art music, and modern idioms of jazz and rock. Nikolai Kapustin seems to be predominantly interested in the genre of instrumental concerto. Among his compositions are three concertos for piano and orchestra (1961,1974,1985), a two-movement concerto for orchestra (1980), a concertino for piano (1957), a concert rhapsody for piano and orchestra (1976). Lately, he has directed his attention to the inexhaustible potentialities of solo piano music. In his pieces for piano published in the 80s (such as “Early-Music-Style-Suite”, Variations, Toccatina, “Daybreak”, “Motive Force”) classical forms are ingeniously enriched with rhythmic, harmonic and textural patterns of swing, big beat, and disco music. It is noteworthy that Nikolai Kapustin succeeds in integrating certain functions of bass guitar and drums into the genuinely pianist fabric of his piano works. All in all, the disk in hand presents exceedingly interesting instances of modern piano music, indicative of this talented Soviet musician's creativeness, self-dependence, and responsivity to the requerements of the day.
